The underwater prairies of Gabicce Mare Over the last few years, some marine plants (their scientific names are Zostera marina and Cymodocea nodosa) have appeared along certain stretches of the coast of Gabicce Mare and they have developed into dense underwater prairies. The presence of these plants (because they are PLANTS not algae) shows that the conditions of the seawater in Gabicce Mare are EXCELLENT as they actually only grow and flourish in unpolluted marine environments. They do not create any hygienic-sanitary problems but on the contrary, they contribute to improving the quality of the water. Furthermore, they slow down coastal erosion and favor the natural maintenance of the shoreline. It is for these reasons that the Italian law on the preservation of biodiversity has been passed, in order to protect the underwater prairies, and they constitute an extremely important naturalistic heritage. The municipality of Gabicce Mare is working towards making this naturalistic heritage compatible with the needs of the tourist economy. |
